Myths and Truths

About sleep

Myth:

Does a weekend sleep catch-up help?

Truth:

A lie-in at the weekend is not the way to do it. Sleep a bit more during the week and go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Keeping to a regular schedule will lead to a better night’s sleep.

Myth:

Can sleep recover the body?

Truth:

A healthy and strong immune system depends on sleep. When you sleep, your body produces cytokines which are proteins that fight infection, prevent sickness and destroy harmful germs.(19) (A good night’s sleep can therefore help the body make the repairs it needs for recovery).

Myth:

Is there an ideal time to go to sleep?

Truth:

Everyone has individual needs and no defined pattern suits all of us. Sleeping at the same time every night and waking at the same time each morning, even at weekends, seems to be the best way to improve sleep quality.(20)

Myth:

Do adults need less sleep as they get older?

Truth:

Sleep patterns tend to change as we age. It’s more likely that older adults don’t need less sleep – they just get less.

Myth:

Are there health benefits if you sleep more?

Truth:

More sleep isn’t always better. There’s no clear evidence that a longer sleep delivers more health benefits.

Introducing

Night Mode

With today’s busy, hectic lifestyles and the need to juggle work, school, health, and finances, it’s not always easy to switch off at the end of the day. Our multi-tasking minds jump from one thing to another making it difficult to wind down and reap the benefits of a good night’s sleep.

Sleep plays a crucial role in our lives – we cannot function effectively without it. Bad sleep quality can impact our physical and mental well-being, creating a never-ending negative loop that further influences our ability to drift off easily.

Night Mode is an enjoyable way to prepare your sleep at the end of the day. It’s a nighttime drink infused with a scientifically studied saffron extract. The unique saffron extract improves sleep quality in just 7 days***, reduce the feelings of sleeplessness, increase melatonin levels that helps regulate circadian rhythms and harmonizes the sleep-wake cycle with night and day. It’s also a mood booster after awakening!

A blend of carefully selected vitamins supports the body’s health while sleeping. Vitamin B6 contributes to normal psychological function and both Vitamin B6 and Riboflavin support normal function of the nervous system.

Useful tips on

Better sleep

  • Night Mode

Night Mode is a perfect bedtime drink infused with a scientifically studied saffron extract to improve sleep quality, reducing the feeling of sleep severity and synchronizing the sleep-wake cycle with night and day by increasing evening melatonin level. It also helps improve your mood after awakening. It can be enjoyed 1 hour before bedtime and brings the added benefits of carefully selected B vitamins to help support normal psychological function and the maintenance of the normal function of the nervous system.

  • Healthy diet

A healthy diet forms the backbone of everything we do in life – including sleeping well! Make sure you’re getting a good amount of fats, carbs, protein, vitamins and minerals in your diet and limit sugar, alcohol and caffeine that might interfere with sleep. You could also try a Herbalife Formula 1 shake as a quick and healthy meal. It contains the ideal blend of key nutrients like proteins, fibre and vitamins and minerals.

  • Exercise regularly

But don’t necessarily do it at night! If you notice that vigorous evening exercise makes it difficult to fall asleep, move your workouts to earlier in the day, avoiding that 2-3 hour period before bedtime.

  • Sleep schedule

Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day—even on the weekends. It’s inevitable that life will get in the way of obtaining the perfect sleep routine, but even just a few small changes can improve sleep dramatically.

  • Bedtime routine

Taking time to unwind will ensure your mind and body can fully switch off before bed. Reading, journalling, meditation, yoga and listening to music are all great relaxation strategies, whilst bright lights, noise, tech and screens will activate the brain and suppress melatonin.

  • Room temperature

Did you know that your body temperature drops as part of your normal sleep cycle? Whilst it’s tempting to seek warmth under cozy blankets, studies show that a hot bedroom can interfere with sleep and cause fatigue the next day.(21) Try opening the window slightly or taking a warm shower before bed. This promotes a cool-down effect that helps you relax.

  • Light control

Wondering why you feel more alert in the day and begin to feel tired after sunset? It’s all to do with the circadian rhythms that guide our sleep cycles and are based on our exposure to natural light. When we switch to artificial lighting in the evening, it tricks our brain into thinking it’s daytime, interfering with melatonin production. Try to avoid big overhead lights and use low lamps at night to help you prepare for sleep in the run up to bedtime.
